#SoleVision: Tommy's Place, Cape Cod.

Once Upon a Time…

There was a magical place where dreams came true, laughter filled the air, and burdens were lifted. This enchanting haven, known as Tommy's Place, was born from a simple yet profound idea. 14 years ago, a kind-hearted man named Tim O'Connell had a last minute cancellation at a vacation home he owned on Martha's Vineyard. Rather than let family and friends use the home, he went to the Floating Hospital for Children in Boston and asked if a family there would be interested in using it for the week. Tim anonymously loaned the home to a family from Lynn who's 8 year old son Grifyn Sawyer had been battling cancer. Upon their departure, Tim was moved by the family's gratitude and the joy the vacation brought. Their week-long stay was filled with laughter, memories, and moments of pure joy. Grifyn's family left heartfelt letters to Tim, expressing their gratitude for the much-needed getaway and the magical experience it provided. Inspired by this encounter, Tim never stopped thinking about the impact a vacation home could have on families going through such a challenging time.

Fast forward to the present day, and Tim’s #SoleVision for Tommy's Place has grown into something truly extraordinary. With two 10+ bedroom year-round magical vacation homes located in Falmouth and Centerville on Cape Cod, Tommy's Place offers a haven for families battling pediatric cancer. Since opening its doors in July 2021 and June 2023, respectively, over 100 families have had the opportunity to enjoy a one-week, free-of-charge dream vacation at Tommy's Place. This week, I had the pleasure of touring Tommy’s Place, Centerville, myself.

From the outside, the home feels a bit mysterious, and as soon as you step inside, you are greeted by Mickey and Minnie Mouse, setting the tone for a magical adventure. The walls of the foyer are adorned with picture frames holding drawings and notes from each child that has stayed at Tommy's Place, serving as an example of the joy and magic that fills the home.

Upon arriving, I was immediately struck by the gentle warmth and kindness radiating from its founder, Tim O'Connell. Tim possesses a rare gift of making those around him feel safe and at home. His eyes sparkled with the promise of adventure and magic as he guided us through the home, revealing every secret nook and cranny. Each curtain we passed through unveiled a new treasure, a hidden passage or a whimsical surprise, serving as evidence of Tim's dedication to creating a truly enchanting experience.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Tommy's Place is the sense of community and kindness that fills its walls. Volunteers, who felt to me more like kind aunties and uncles than strangers, ensure that every family feels welcomed, loved, and supported during their stay. For the families who visit, Tommy's Place is not just a vacation destination; it's a place where they can forget about their pain, let go of their worries, and simply have fun.
